Dharma Master Xiu'an: Taboo name Kezhi, courtesy name Wuzhi, sobriquet Xiu'an, a son of the Li family of Linhai. At twelve he left home, and at nineteen he was ordained. He studied under the Venerable Pujue Ming and the Venerable Baiyan Zhen, who invited him to take the seat of senior monk to assist in spreading the correct transformation. During the Zhiyuan era, he appeared in the world [as abbot] of Ansheng Cloister. Ascending to succeed Pujue, he moved to Long'en, filling Baiyan's former post. He was selected to preside over Longhua; all that had fallen into neglect was revived, and the monastic precinct was completely transformed. Having sat as abbot at four places of practice, he was heavily relied upon by all quarters. He built Xiu'an (Hermitage of Rest) where he cultivated the buddha-mindfulness samādhi daily, saying: 'This is precisely the work of meditative absorption; how could one forcibly distinguish identity and difference?' In the sixth year of Hongwu, Zhongtianzhu invited the master, but the assembly of Jingci met him on the road and urged him into their seat. On the eleventh day of the eighth month of that year, he said, 'I am about to pass away.' The assembly asked for a farewell verse. The master said, 'Our school fundamentally has no verbal explanations.' Thereupon, joining his fingers and continuously chanting the Buddha's name, he passed away. His age was sixty-nine, and his monastic age was fifty. When he was cremated, his teeth were strung together like pearls, unconsumed, and relics glittering like gold, silver, and crystal were scattered all over the ground; they were stored in the Dragon Stūpa.
