In the bingchen year, the ninth year of Hongwu, in the sixth month, Song Lian was appointed Chancellor of the Hanlin Academy. The Emperor instructed him, saying: 'I became the Son of Heaven from a commoner, and you too arose from the grassy wilderness, ranking first among the founding civil officials in attendance. Let hereditary ministers share prosperity with the state.' At that time, the Directorate of Astronomy reported that the five planets were deviating in their courses and the sun and moon were in conflict. A decree was issued seeking counsel. There was one Wu Yin, a monk of Zhongshan Monastery, who possessed literary talent. The Emperor personally selected him, ordered him to grow his hair and accept office, directly appointing him to a regional administrative post, favoring him very generously; most of his advice was followed. In the tenth month, the Imperial Ancestral Temple was rebuilt, following the system of a shared hall with separate chambers. At the founding of the dynasty, four ancestral shrines had been established: the shrine of Dezu, Emperor Xuan, was in the center; Yizu was in the first shrine to the east; Xizu was in the first shrine to the west; and Renzu was in the second shrine to the east. By this time, this system was finalized: the front was the main hall and the rear was the resting palace of nine bays, with each bay serving as a chamber, where the spirit tablets of each shrine were enshrined. During the seasonal sacrifices and the year-end grand sacrifice, the robes and caps of the successive emperors and empresses were laid out upon the spirit thrones to offer sacrifice to them.
