He was the second son of Emperor Xuanzong, born to Noble Consort Wu. He was originally enfeoffed as the Prince of Cheng. When Emperor Yingzong was captured during the northern campaign, he received the decree of Empress Dowager Sun: since the Crown Prince was young and tender and unable to ascend the throne, the Prince of Cheng, being older, was to supervise the state. Soon after, the ministers urged his accession, and he assumed the supreme throne, reigning for seven years. When Emperor Yingzong was restored, he deposed him back to the Prince of Cheng, sending him to the Western Palace. At the time, the Prince was already ill, and after several days he passed away. In the tenth year of Chenghua, an order restored his temple name, and he was honored with the posthumous title Emperor Jing, Respectful, Benevolent, Peaceful, and Steadfast.
