憲宗長子。紀妃生于西宮。妃少乳。太監張敏以粉餌餔之。護視惟謹。後悼恭太子薨內官漸傳。西宮有皇子。六歲矣。萬貴妃驚而召入昭德。因立為太子。憲宗崩。即位在位十八年。年三十六歲。乙丑五月初七日。崩于乾清宮。上徽號曰。導天明道誠純中正聖文純武至仁大德敬皇帝。廟號孝宗。葬太陵。

He was the eldest son of Emperor Xianzong, born to Consort Ji in the Western Palace. The Consort had little breast milk, so the eunuch Zhang Min fed him with powder and cakes, guarding and caring for him with utmost diligence. Later, after Crown Prince Daogong died, palace officials gradually spread word that there was an imperial son in the Western Palace, already six years old. Noble Consort Wan was astonished and summoned him into the Zhaode Palace, whereupon he was installed as Crown Prince. When Emperor Xianzong died, he ascended the throne and reigned for eighteen years, living to the age of thirty-six. On the seventh day of the fifth month in the yichou year, he passed away in the Qianqing Palace. He was conferred the honorific title: Emperor Daotian Mingdao Chengchun Zhongzheng Shengwen Chunwu Zhiren Dade the Reverent. His temple name was Xiaozong, and he was buried in Tailing.
