Chan Master Yuelin, taboo name Jing, was a native of Hangzhou. From youth he was exceptionally gifted, and left household life at a tender age. At twenty, he had his head shaved, took monastic robes, and practiced pure karma exclusively. He inquired into the "original person," and after a long time he was awakened. He composed a verse saying: "Original person, original person, / With neither brain nor head, how to seek him? / Suddenly snatching hold of that nostril— / Take a look, originally he is just an ordinary fellow!" From then on, his renown spread far and wide. He served as the abbot of Jingshan, being the eightieth generation. The presented scholar Lord Zhang Ning praised him, saying in brief: "The auspicious lingzhi fungus blooms thrice, the ancient cypress measures ten arm-spans around. Attaining authentic transmission where none was handed down, continuing the wondrous Dharma from Dongyu." It also said: "Surpassing Longmian in the lower realm, reviving the elephant teaching amid decline. The Chancellor opened a ground for selecting buddhas; the Venerable awakened to the supramundane Dharma. Floating with the current, stopping when meeting Jingshan. Destiny had it that the Guoyi of former days also arose from Kunshan. Allowing Poxian, after his initial deliverance, to roam once more in the abbot's quarters. All my companions beyond the dust extol this young gentleman among the monks." In the jimao year of Zhengde [1519], he returned to quiescence.
