Chan Master Fazhou: taboo name Daoji, style name Fazhou. Born in Sixian Lane of the Zhang clan. In his twenties, he entered Tianning Monastery as a postulant, diligently attending upon Chan Master Motang Xuan. Next, he served Master Ji'an Zuo, inquiring morning and night. One day, hearing the sound of the chime stone in the Buddha hall, he experienced a sudden awakening. He hurried to the abbot's quarters at the hermitage, where he was tested and confirmed. He then called upon various masters such as Guyin and Yunfeng, his realization growing deeper day by day. He resided at monasteries such as Juewang, Jingde, and Shuangji. At the beginning of the Jiajing era, he appeared in the world [as abbot] at Anyin in Jinling. A monk asked: "What is the realm of Anyin?" The master said: "Three mountains half-fall beyond the blue sky; / two waters divide Baiguzhou in the middle." [The monk] also asked: "What is the household style of Anyin?" The master said: "A stone tiger fights before the mountain; / a mud cow sleeps beneath the water." Next he reached Yangxian, and returned to Xieli, lodging like clouds at various monasteries such as Tianning and Lingguang. He hired a boat on the South Lake, drifting freely with the wind. Later he entered Mount Bian in Wuxing to reside, and then returned to Tianning, ending his days there. The master maintained divine dhāraṇīs with much efficacy: he incanted an empty well to bring back deep springs, and provided a lodging specially for an Indian monk; green frogs came to the window to listen to his recitations, and divine beings entered the room to protect and sustain him. Later, he also laughed, mocked, grew angry, and scolded, unrestrainedly self-composed so that people could not fathom him. In the autumn of the gengshen year, he fell ill in bed and passed away. He was seventy-four years old, with fifty-two monastic years. His relics were enshrined in a separate hall. He had Dharma discourses and verse praises, entitled Residual Words.
