Chan Master Yuzhi: taboo name Faju, art name Yuequan. A son of the Fu family of Jiahe, his mother was née Feng. In his youth he studied the Confucian classics and mastered the canonical texts. He served Master Wang Yangming and grasped the doctrine of innate knowledge (liangzhi). After renouncing the household, he studied under Chan Master Mengju and presented two verses, saying: / "The lake's light relies upon three thousand qing; / The mountain's color opens to five or six peaks. / What meets the eye is originally an accomplished reality; / The cattail mat today no longer refines stubborn emptiness. (First) / "A gaze full of scenery suffices for daily life; / Who on level ground distinguishes between close and distant? / Even if Bodhidharma transmitted the essential secret of the mind, / If asked, one still would not recognize him." / Through question, answer, and sharpening, he was thereby thoroughly enlightened. He built a hermitage on Mount Jing, and an auspicious fungus (zhi) sprouted beneath his seat; people called him the "Jade Fungus (Yuzhi) Monk." Later he dwelt at Mount Tianchi, ending his days there. At that time, masters of Neo-Confucianism such as Lord Yi'an Tang, Lord Longxi Wang, and Lord Baishi Cai visited the master in the mountains to verify the common ground between Confucianism and Buddhism. The master inscribed on Lord Cai's Kuoran Hall: / "Confucianism calls it the Great Impartiality; / Buddhism calls it the Holy Non-existence. / Neither two nor one, / Like water and moon, or an empty mirror. / The mind does not keep company with things; / Things do not contend with me. / The ocean seal shines vastly, / Responsive stillness meets all things, / The wondrous perfection reaches its utmost; / Cessation is called nothing but correct samādhi." / In the guihai year of the Jiajing era, he passed away. Recorded sayings of his circulate in the world.
