Dharma Master Yugang: Dharma Master Mengrun, styled Ziyu and called Yugang, of Xiazhu in Hangzhou, was a native of Haiyan. He was the nephew of Dharma Master Guyuan Qing and the premier disciple of Dharma Master Zhutang Chuan. When he was born, his mother experienced a wondrous dream. When he bowed before the earth-hewn icons of the saṅghārāma, they all toppled forward. When he cultivated the Guanyin repentance, his heart ailment was instantly cured; when he lectured on the Lotus Sūtra, butchers and vintners abandoned their trades. Dwelling at Fenghuangling, he devoted himself solely to reciting the Buddha's name and cultivating the Lotus, Bright Light, Great Compassion, and Pure Land repentances, very often taking forty-nine days as the term. Later he imparted to his disciples the method of śamatha-vipaśyanā for pacifying the mind, invoked the Buddha, and passed away.
