The Emperor asked the Master of the Altar Jian: "Where is there a Buddha?" Jian memorialized: "My Emperor is precisely the Buddha." The Emperor said: "How am I the Buddha?" Jian said: "Killing and giving life reside in your hand; Heaven and Earth are balanced upon your palm." When the Emperor reached eighty years of age, he said: "Living to the same age as Śākyamuni Tathāgata cannot be deemed dying young." When the Emperor passed away and the spirit carriage passed through Xuande, a great circular radiance appeared, encompassing the celestial realm and the entire region; both clergy and laity beheld and worshipped it. This was surely a manifestation of the functioning of an ancient Buddha's apparition. (The above is from the Hongjiao ji and is fully recorded in the Fozu tongzai).
