Dharma Master Xinyuan: his taboo name was Jujing, his style name was Xinyuan, and his alternate sobriquet was Lanxue. His learning encompassed both internal and external texts; he was skilled in literary composition and strictly observant of the vinaya. He bowed to Venerable Yiyu of Da Bao'en Monastery in Jinling, and later studied under Dharma Master Jiyuan of Hangzhou. In the early Yongle era, he received an imperial decree to collate the Great Canon of scriptures and participated in compiling the collected statutes. Soon afterward, he became abbot of Guangfu Lecture Monastery in Shanghai, and then transferred to Puzhao [Monastery] in Songjiang, where he broadly opened the Dharma assembly for thirteen years. He built the Mahāvīra Hall, Haiyue Hall, the Three Gates of Liberation, colonnades and layered balconies, meditation cells, and monastic kitchens, renewing them splendidly. The seven assemblies looked up to him with reverence, and his virtuous teachings spread widely.
