Chan Master Chushan, whose taboo name was Shaoqi and secular surname was Lei, was a native of Tang'an. At the age of nine he left home. At first he studied under the Venerable Xuanji, and finally visited Chan Master Wuji at Dongpu, from whom he received the Dharma. Wuji said, "Give me back the meaning of the word 'No' (wu)!" The Master replied:
"Where this monk questioned, troubles multiplied;
How could old Zhaozhou ever have engaged in deliberate thought?
With a slip of the tongue, the whole truth was blurted out,
Turning around to make people harbor doubt on purpose."
Wuji asked, "What is the place without doubt?" He replied, "Blue mountains, green waters, swallows chirping, and orioles singing. Everything is distinct and clear—what more is there to doubt?" Thereupon, Wuji conferred the Dharma upon him.
