At that time, in the Tuṣita heavenly palace, a devaputra had this thought: “The Bodhisattva has already been born into King Śuddhodana's palace. I too should descend to be born in the human realm. When the Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, I can be among the first to become his retinue, make offerings to him, and listen to the Dharma.” Having thought this, he immediately descended to be born in the city of Rājagṛha, into the Candrakula clan, the royal family of King Candragupta. Further, there were devaputras who were born into the royal family of the kingdom of Śrāvastī; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Sthūlakoṣṭhaka; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Vatsa; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Bhalla; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Roruka; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Takṣaśilā; devaputras born into the royal family of the kingdom of Gopā; devaputras born into brāhmaṇa families; and devaputras born into families of elders, householders, vaiśyas, and śūdras. Further, five hundred devaputras were born into the Śākya clan. In this way, devaputras numbering ninety-nine hundred million descended to be born in the human realm. Moreover, those descending from Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven down to the Four Heavenly Kings were beyond count. Further, kings of the form realm together with their retinues also descended and became ṛṣis.
While the Bodhisattva was in the womb, his walking, standing, sitting, and lying down were unhindered, nor did he cause his mother any suffering. In the morning, while in his mother's womb, the Bodhisattva expounded varied teachings for the devas of the form realm. At midday, he also expounded teachings for the devas of the desire realm. In the afternoon, he further expounded teachings for the spirits and ghosts. During the three watches of the night, it was also like this, maturing and benefiting countless sentient beings. (The Puyao jing says: “While the Bodhisattva was in the womb for ten months, he instructed and transformed thirty-six hundred million gods and humans, establishing them in the Śrāvaka Vehicle and the Great Vehicle.”)
While the Bodhisattva was in the womb, among the queen's maidens, some came to bow and make offerings; some came and made this vow: “May he be made to become a wheel-turning sage king!” Hearing this, the Bodhisattva felt no joy. Some came and made this vow: “May he be made to attain the knowledge of all aspects!” Hearing this, the Bodhisattva rejoiced greatly.
When the Bodhisattva had stayed in the womb for nearly ten months, his limbs and marks and signs were all complete. He also caused his mother's sense faculties to be tranquil; she took pleasure in parks and groves and disliked turmoil. At that time, King Śuddhodana thought to himself: “The months and days of the queen’s pregnancy are nearly fulfilled, yet I do not see signs of childbirth.” Just as he thought this, it happened that the queen sent a messenger to address the king: “I now wish to go out to stroll and look upon the parks and groves.” Hearing this, the king was all the more filled with joy. He immediately issued orders outside to have the Lumbinī Grove swept and sprinkled clean, to plant more marvelous flowers and fruits, and to purify all the springs and bathing pools. The balustrades, stairs, and terraces were all adorned with the seven treasures. Kingfishers, mandarin ducks, fenghuang, and owls—diverse kinds of birds—gathered and sang within it. Silk banners and canopies were suspended, flowers scattered, incense burned, and various music played, just like Śakra's Garden of Delight.
He further ordered that all places along the route she would traverse be made adorned and pure, decorated in diverse ways. He also ordered the preparation of one hundred thousand carriages of the seven treasures, each carved and adorned exceptionally. He further ordered the preparation of the fourfold army outside: elephant troops, cavalry, chariot troops, and infantry. He also selected eighty-four thousand palace maidens from the inner palace, whose appearance was upright, neither old nor young, harmonious and gentle in disposition, intelligent, and clear-minded, to attend upon Queen Māyā. He further selected eighty-four thousand upright maidens adorned with marvelous necklaces and bodily ornaments, carrying incense and flowers, to go ahead and dwell in the Lumbinī Grove. The king also ordered all ministers and the hundred officials to attend upon and escort the queen as she departed. Thereupon, the queen mounted a jeweled palanquin, and accompanied by the officials and maidens in front and behind, proceeded to the Lumbinī Grove. At that time, the eight classes of beings, including devas and nāgas, also followed, filling the open sky.
