At that time, the royal preceptor and the great minister arrived in the ascetic grove of the ṛṣi Bhārgava. Leaving behind their attendants and ceremonial regalia, they went forward to the dwelling place of the ṛṣi. The ṛṣi invited them to sit, and they exchanged greetings. Thereupon the royal preceptor said to the ṛṣi: "I am the preceptor of King Śuddhodana. The reason we have come here now is that King Śuddhodana's prince, fully endowed with the auspicious marks, grew weary and disgusted with the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and left home to study the Way, his path leading through this grove. Did the great ṛṣi see him?" The ṛṣi Bhārgava answered the royal preceptor: "Recently, I saw a youth here, handsome in countenance, endowed with the marks and signs. He came into this grove and conversed with me. He stayed for one night, and I did not know that he was the king's prince. Depreciating the way we practice, he went north from here to visit the ṛṣi Ārāḍa Kālāma." Then the royal preceptor and the great minister, having heard these words, immediately went swiftly to that ṛṣi's place. On the way, they saw the prince from afar, sitting upright under a tree in meditation, his marks and brilliance surpassing the sun and moon. They dismounted from their horses, dismissed their guards, removed their ceremonial robes, and went before the prince. Sitting to one side, they exchanged greetings. Thereupon the royal preceptor said to the prince: "The Great King has sent us to seek out the prince, wishing to have something said." The prince replied: "What does my royal father instruct you to say?" The royal preceptor answered: "The Great King has long known that the prince takes deep delight in leaving home, and that this resolve is difficult to turn back. However, the king's affection for the prince is deep; the blazing fire of sorrow constantly burns within him, and it requires the prince's return to extinguish it. We pray you turn your carriage around and return to the palace city. Though there are worldly affairs, we will not cause the prince to abandon his pursuit of the Way. A place of quietude of mind does not necessarily have to be in the mountain forests. Mahāprajāpatī, Yaśodharā, and your kin inside and out are all submerged in the great ocean of grief and distress, longing for the prince to return and rescue them."
