At that time, the earth deity, seeing the Tathāgata turning the wheel of the Dharma in its domain, rejoiced greatly in its mind and called out in a loud voice, "Here the Tathāgata turns the wondrous wheel of the Dharma!" The sky devas, having heard these words, also leaped for joy, relaying the cry successively up to the Akaniṣṭha Heaven. When all the devas heard this, they rejoiced boundlessly and called out in loud voices, "Today, in the country of Vārāṇasī, in the Deer Park, the dwelling place of the ṛṣis, the Tathāgata has turned the great wheel of the Dharma, which no one in all the world—deva, human, Māra, Brahmā, śramaṇa, or brāhmaṇa—can turn!" At that time, the great earth shook in eighteen ways. The eight classes of beings, including devas and nāgas, played diverse instrumental music in the open sky, and the celestial drums sounded on their own; they burned various famous incenses, scattered wonderful flowers, and with jewel banners, canopies, songs, and chants praised him. Throughout the world, a great light naturally appeared. Among the disciples, Ājñātakauṇḍinya was the foremost disciple because he was the first to awaken. At that time, when the four others, including Mahānāman, heard the Buddha turn the wheel of the Dharma and saw Ājñātakauṇḍinya alone awaken to the traces of the Path, they thought to themselves, "If the World-Honoured One preaches the Dharma for us further, we too will surely awaken to the Path." Having had this thought, they gazed up at the Honoured One's countenance without looking away for an instant. At that time, the World-Honoured One knew the thoughts of the four men, and immediately expounded the four truths extensively for them once more. Thereupon, with regard to all phenomena, the four men also left dust and defilement behind and attained the pure Dharma-eye. When the five men had seen the traces of the Path, they bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet and said to the Buddha, "World-Honoured One, we five have seen the traces of the Path and realized the traces of the Path. We now wish to go forth and cultivate the Path in the Buddha's Dharma; we only pray that the World-Honoured One compassionately grant permission." At that time, the World-Honoured One called to the five men, "Welcome, bhikṣus!" Their hair and beards fell off naturally, kāṣāyas appeared upon their bodies, and they immediately became śramaṇas. At that time, the World-Honoured One asked the five men, "You bhikṣus, do you know whether form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness are permanent or impermanent? Are they suffering or not suffering? Are they empty or not empty? Are they with a self or without a self?" When the five bhikṣus heard the Buddha teach this Dharma of the five aggregates, their outflows were exhausted, their minds liberated, and they attained the fruit of arhatship. They immediately replied, saying, "World-Honoured One, form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness are truly impermanent, suffering, empty, and non-self." Thereupon, there were for the first time six arhats in the world. The Buddha-arhat is the Buddha Jewel; the wheel of the Dharma of the four truths is the Dharma Jewel; the five arhats are the Saṅgha Jewel. In this way, the Three Jewels were complete in the world, becoming the supreme field of merit for all devas and humans.
