我於昔日中　所事火功德
得生天人中　受於五欲樂
恒如是輪轉　沒於生死海
我見此過患　所以棄捨之
又復事火福　得生天人中
增長貪恚癡　是故我遠離
又復事火福　為求將來生
既已有生故　必有老病死
已見如此事　是故棄火法
施會修苦行　乃以事火福
雖得生梵天　此非究竟處
以是因緣故　所以棄事火
我見如來法　離生老病死
究竟解脫處　是故今出家
如來真解脫　為諸天人師
以是因緣故　歸依大聖尊
如來大慈悲　現種種方便
及諸神通力　而以引導我
云何而復應　奉事於火法

"From the merit of serving fire in former days,
I was reborn among gods and humans,
Experiencing the pleasures of the five desires;
Constantly turning in the cycle of transmigration like this,
I was submerged in the sea of birth and death.
Seeing these faults and perils,
I therefore abandoned it.
Furthermore, from the merit of serving fire,
Being reborn among gods and humans,
Greed, hatred, and delusion only increased;
Therefore I distanced myself from it.
Furthermore, from the merit of serving fire,
One seeks future rebirth;
Since there is birth,
There must be aging, illness, and death.
Having seen such matters,
I therefore abandoned the practice of fire[-worship].
Through giving assemblies and practicing austerities,
And even through the merit of serving fire,
Though one may be reborn in the Brahmā heaven,
This is not the ultimate place.
For this reason,
I abandoned serving fire.
I have seen that the Tathāgata's Dharma
Is free from birth, aging, illness, and death,
The place of ultimate liberation;
Therefore I have now gone forth from home.
The Tathāgata is truly liberated,
The teacher of gods and humans;
For this reason,
I take refuge in the Great Holy Honoured One.
The Tathāgata, with great compassion,
Manifested various skillful means
And spiritual powers
To guide me.
Why, then, should I once more
Serve the practice of fire?"
