At that time, the brahmins, ministers, and other people, seeing the king offer and dedicate the saṅghārāma to the Tathāgata, all leaped for joy and gave rise to a mind of sympathetic joy. At that time, King Bimbisāra, having donated the saṅghārāma, was greatly joyful in his heart, bowed his head to [the Buddha's] feet, and withdrew to where he stayed. Among the kings of Jambudvīpa who met the Buddha, Bimbisāra was the very first; among the saṅghārāmas, the Bamboo Grove Saṅghārāma was the very first. At that time, the World-Honoured One and the bhikṣus resided in the Bamboo Grove Saṅghārāma. In those days, in the city of Rājagṛha, there were two brahmins who were intelligent, sharp-witted, and possessed of great wisdom; there were no scriptures or treatises they had not mastered, and no one could refute or subdue them in eloquence and debate. One was surnamed Kaulita and named Upatisya; his mother was named Śārī, hence the whole world called him Śāriputra. The second was surnamed Maudgalyāyana and named Kolita. Each had one hundred disciples, and they were universally venerated by the people of the state. The two were close friends and held each other in high esteem. They made a solemn pledge together: 'Whichever of us first hears the wondrous Dharma must instruct and awaken the other, and must not begrudge it.'
