East of the city of Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, in the Garden of Illumination, there is a stūpa for the Buddha's hair. South of the city of Trāyastriṃśa, in the Rough and Astringent Garden, there is a stūpa for the Buddha's robe. West of the city of Trāyastriṃśa, in the Garden of Joy, there is a stūpa for the Buddha's bowl. North of the city of Trāyastriṃśa, in the Garden of Chariots, there is a stūpa for the Buddha's tooth. The Dazhidulun states: "Śakra, Lord of the Gods, took the Bodhisattva's hair and erected a hair-stūpa outside the eastern gate of the celestial city; he also took the Bodhisattva's precious robe and erected a robe-stūpa outside the eastern gate of the city." (Sengyou notes: According to the sūtras and vinayas, there are four great stūpas among humans: The stūpa of the place of birth is in the realm of Kapilavastu, situated at the center of three thousand suns and moons, of twelve thousand heavens and earths. The stūpa of the attainment of the Way is in the realm of Magadha, beneath the primordially auspicious tree at the seat of excellent victory. The stūpa of the turning of the wheel of the Dharma is in the realm of Vārāṇasī, in the Deer Park where ancient ṛṣis dwelt. The stūpa of the nirvāṇa is in the realm of Kuśinagara, the birthplace of the mallas, between the twin trees of the splendid grove.) Sengyou reflects with reverence: When the Supreme Person dwelt in the world, his benefits were vast and great. His hair, nails, robes, and bowl all served as Dharma activities. Therefore, precious shrines have risen like clouds of rosy dawn, broadly covering gods and humans. The origin of erecting stūpas was not merely for the dispersal of [the relics of] his physical body.
