4.17

長阿含經云。爾時世尊。即記莂千二百弟子所得道果。世尊披欝多羅僧。出金色臂告諸比丘。汝等當觀。如來時時出世。如優曇花時一現耳。

The Dīrghāgama says: At that time, the World-Honoured One then prophesied the fruits of the Path to be attained by his one thousand two hundred disciples. The World-Honoured One opened his uttarāsaṅga, extended his golden arm, and addressed the monks: 'You must observe that a Tathāgata appears in the world only occasionally, like the udumbara flower which appears but once in a great while.'
