Śākyamuni Buddha addressed the great assembly, saying: 'Formerly, incalculable kalpas ago, during the Semblance Dharma of the Buddha Vimalaprabha, I left home to train in the Path and heard the names of fifty-three Buddhas. Having heard them, I joined my palms and felt joy in my heart. I then taught others, causing them to hear and uphold them. Having heard them, others taught one another in turn, up to three thousand persons. These three thousand persons, with different mouths but one voice, recited the names of the Buddhas and single-mindedly paid homage. Through the power of the merit of this cause and condition, they were immediately able to transcend the transgressions of birth and death spanning incalculable billions of kalpas. Among them, one thousand persons—with the Buddha Prabhāketu at their head, down to Vipaśyin—attained the Buddha Path during the Vyūhakalpa; these are the thousand Buddhas of the past. The middle thousand Buddhas—with Krakucchanda Buddha at their head, down to the Tathāgata Rucika—successively attain Buddhahood during the Bhadrakalpa. The latter thousand Buddhas—with the Tathāgata Sūryaprabha at their head, down to Sumeruketu—shall attain Buddhahood during the Nakṣatrakalpa. The presently existing Buddhas of the ten directions, such as the Tathāgata Bhadraśrī and others, also, because they heard these names of the fifty-three Buddhas, each attained Buddhahood in the worlds of the ten directions. The names of the past fifty-three Buddhas are in the Sūtra on the Contemplation of the Two Bodhisattvas Bhaiṣajyarāja and Bhaiṣajyasamudgata. The names of the three thousand Buddhas are in the Sūtra on the Flowers of Assembled Merits of the Buddhas. The names, lands, castes, parents, disciples, retinues, assemblies, and lifespans of the thousand Buddhas are in the Bhadrakalpikasūtra. Śākya is the fourth to attain Buddhahood among the middle thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa.'
