The *Ekottarikāgama* says: "At that time, heavenly sons who had many lustful thoughts became women. Thereupon they indulged in sexual desire and took pleasure together. Looking at each other, lustful thoughts arose, and together in secluded places they engaged in impure conduct. When other beings saw this, they cried: 'Alas, how unrighteous! How can beings do such things?' When the men saw others scolding them, they repented and threw themselves to the ground. Then the women brought food and gave it to them, helping them to rise. Because of this, the worldly designation of an unwholesome 'husband and master' arose; and because they brought food to their husbands, they were named 'wives'. Afterward, beings indulged in debauchery, and in order to shield themselves, they built houses. By this cause, households were established in the world. Thereafter, beings' debauchery increased even more, and husbands and wives came to live together. Other beings whose life span and merits were exhausted descended from the Ābhāsvara Heaven to be born here, entering the mother's womb. Because of this, birth from the womb came to exist in the world."
