Sengyou bows first to the Most Victorious Honored One,
and knocks his head before the pure, peerless Dharma;
next he takes refuge in the defilement-free arhat Saṅgha.
May the compassionate protection of the Three Jewels abide forever in the world!
In the Semblance and Final ages faith is scarce and impure;
false views bewilder and drown beings, plunging them into manifold sufferings.
The Tripiṭaka is vast and vast, difficult to investigate thoroughly;
laziness and hindrances cause the Dharma to perish.
Therefore I have collected the records of the origins and conditions of the Original Teacher,
verifying through sūtras and vinayas to increase the roots of faith.
Looking up in reverence to the resolution and vows of the mahāsattvas,
I dare to entrust this grand aspiration to future generations.
May those who see and hear it share the merit of sympathetic joy,
and may the lamp of the Dharma extend its radiance until the end of all future time!
