At that time there was a ṛṣi who was skilled in physiognomy. He spoke to the multitude, saying, “Now this benevolent one is fully endowed with all the primary marks; he will surely attain sarvākārajñatā and become a teacher of devas and humans.” Together they all went to the prince and said, “The way of practice is different, so we dare not detain you. If you wish to depart, you may head north. There is a great ṛṣi there named Ārāḍa Kālāma; you, benevolent one, may go and discourse with him. Yet as I observe you, benevolent one, you will also not necessarily remain in that place.” Thereupon the prince headed north. Seeing the prince depart, the multitude of ṛṣis felt grief; with palms joined, they escorted him, gazing as far as their sight could reach until he was lost to view, and only then did they return.
