The king had four sons: the first was named Facelight (Ulāmukha), the second Elephant-Food (Hathinīka), the third Road-Finger (Aṅgīrasa), and the fourth Adornment (Kāraṇḍaka). (Sengyou notes: The names of the four sons in the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya differ from this; Adornment is the one from whom King Śuddhodana was descended.) When the king's four sons committed a minor fault, the king banished them from the realm. They went to the side of the Snowy Mountains (Himālaya) and lived in an oak/śāka forest. The mothers of the four sons and the clan members all longed for them, and together held a council, went to King *Iṣīma, and said: "The Great King should know, we have been separated from the four sons for a long time and wish to go visit them." The king then told them: "Go as you wish." Having heard the king's instruction, the mothers and their relatives immediately went to the Snowy Mountains, arrived at the oak/śāka forest, and reached the four sons. Then the mothers each arranged marriages for them. Later, King *Iṣīma heard that the four sons had begotten handsome children. The king was delighted and uttered these words: "These are true Śākyas (capable ones), able to establish themselves!" For this reason they were named Śākya.
