The Xiuxing benqi jing says: When the prince was seventeen years of age, the king sought to select celebrated maidens for him, but none pleased him. There was a king of a small state named Suprabuddha, which in Chinese means Shan Jue ("Good Awakening"). His daughter was named Gopī, exceptionally beautiful and peerless. Eight kingdoms all sought her, but he gave her to none. King Śuddhodana summoned him and said: "I wish to betroth your daughter to the prince." Suprabuddha was sorrowful, [thinking]: "If I do not consent, I fear I will be attacked; if I give her, I will incur the enmity of the other kingdoms." The daughter said, presenting a petition to King Śuddhodana: "Whosoever in the realm is foremost in valor and martial skill, to him alone shall I belong." The king commanded the ministers to go out together to the tournament ground. The prince lifted the elephant and shot an arrow that struck Mount Cakravāḍa. Suprabuddha then sent his daughter to the prince's palace.
