At that time, in the night, the Bodhisattva observed the courtesans: their hundred joints hollow like plantain trees, mucus running from their noses and tears from their eyes, their musical instruments lying scattered. Turning to look at his wife, he fully perceived her physical form: brain and skull, heart, lungs, intestines, and stomach; on the outside, a leather bag, inside, a foul place. Formed of borrowed elements, it must be returned and cannot endure. The three realms are without refuge; only the Path can be relied upon. The devas of the desire realm stood in the sky. A deva son of Dharma practice spoke from afar to the Bodhisattva: 'The time has arrived. The star Tiṣya has just appeared.' [The Bodhisattva] immediately commanded Chandaka to rise and saddle Kaṇṭhaka. As soon as he uttered these words, the Four Heavenly Kings along with countless yakṣas, nāgas, and others, all clad in armor, came from the four directions. They bowed their heads to the Bodhisattva. The men and women in the city were all exhausted and deeply asleep; the peacocks and flocks of birds were also exhausted and fast asleep.
