The Buddha traveled through various countries and did not return for a long time. Sudatta, longing and yearning for him, came to see him and addressed the Buddha, saying: "I pray that you grant me some small item, so that I may constantly make offerings [to it]." The Buddha thereupon gave him hair and fingernails. [Sudatta] addressed the Buddha, saying: "I pray that you permit me to erect a stūpa." The Buddha said: "I permit it." He also addressed him, saying: "Permit me to make niches, to set out curved beams, to make bracket sets, to install balustrades, and to decorate them with various colors and sundry adornments." The Buddha permitted it all.
