At that time, the assembly of gods, humans, asuras, and others, having heard this Dharma, felt unbounded joy and leaped about, knowing that the Buddha is ever-abiding. They scattered various kinds of flowers and sounded celestial music. Then the World-Honoured One, having conferred predictions upon Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva Kāśyapa, and Cunda, spoke these words: 'Good sons, cultivate your own minds and be ever vigilant. Now my back is ailing and my whole body aches. I wish to lie down, just like a small child or a chronic invalid. Mañjuśrī, you and the others should expound the Great Dharma extensively for the fourfold assembly. I now entrust this Dharma to you; when Kāśyapa, Ānanda, and the others arrive, it should be entrusted to them as well.' Having spoken these words, the Tathāgata, in order to subdue all sentient beings, manifested an illness in his body and lay down on his right side, like a sick person.
