The Buddha was in the city of Kuśinagara, at the place where the Mallas were born, beside the river Airāvatī between the twin śāla trees, together with a great assembly of eighty hundred-thousand nayutas of bhikṣus surrounding him before and behind. On the fifteenth day of the second month, when the time of nirvāṇa was imminent, he produced a great sound through the Buddha's supernatural power, reaching even to the peak of existence according to their kinds of sounds, universally announcing to sentient beings: "Today the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, who pities sentient beings as if they were Rāhula, serving as their refuge—the Great Awakened World-Honoured One is about to enter nirvāṇa. If any sentient beings have doubts, they may now ask everything; let it be their final questioning."
