At that time, the ministers wished to establish the crown prince to succeed to the royal throne. Among them was a great minister named Anuruddha, who said to the ministers, "You cannot immediately establish the prince. Why is this? When the Great King Aśoka was alive, his original vow was to complete a hundred billion pieces of gold in performing various meritorious deeds. He still fell short by four kotis, not reaching the full hundred billion. For this reason, he has now renounced Jambudvīpa and given it to the Three Jewels in order to fulfill it. Now this great earth belongs to the Three Jewels; how can you establish the crown prince as king?" When the ministers heard this, they deliberated and produced four kotis of gold to send to the monastery, and then immediately enthroned the son of Dharmavardhana, named Saṃprati, as king.
