The sūtra states: At that time, beneath the tree, seven stems of seven-jeweled lotus flowers sprang up, as large as chariot wheels. The Bodhisattva descended onto the lotus flowers and, without anyone supporting him, walked seven steps on his own. The Da shanquan [jing] states: In order to correspond to the seven limbs of awakening, he walked seven steps. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states that he walked seven steps in each of the ten directions. The sūtra states: He then raised his right hand and said, “Among all gods and humans, I am the most honored and the most supreme. Immeasurable births and deaths are brought to an end; I shall benefit all gods and humans.” The Daquan states: As for raising his hand and manifesting this sign, it was to eliminate non-Buddhists who, deeming themselves supreme, would surely fall into evil realms. Therefore, the Benqi states: “In the heavens and below the heavens, I alone am honored. The three realms are all suffering; what is there to enjoy?”
