The sūtra states: The king summoned five hundred skilled physiognomists to examine the prince in the great jeweled hall. They all said, “If he leaves household life, he will become a Buddha; if he remains at home, he will be a wheel-turning king.” They also said, “The great ṛṣi of Gandhamādana Mountain, Asita, possesses the five supernormal powers and can resolve the king’s doubts.” That ṛṣi, in response to the thought, soared through the sky and arrived at the palace. The prince was brought out, intending to have him pay respects [to the ṛṣi], but the ṛṣi stopped him, saying, “He is the most honored in the three realms.” He immediately stood up, joined his palms, and paid homage at the prince’s feet. Having completed the examination of the marks, he suddenly wept. He then said, “At the age of nineteen, he will become a wheel-turning king; if he leaves household life, he will achieve all-knowledge, and indeed he must become a Buddha to preach the Dharma and deliver people. Because the marks are evident and all occupy their proper places. I am now already one hundred and twenty years old; before long, I will be born in the Heaven of Non-conception and will not witness the Buddha’s arising. Therefore, I weep for myself.”
