The sūtra says: When the Prince was seven years old, the king summoned and selected companions to serve as his teachers, building a schoolroom and testing him with books. The Puyao jing says: Holding a golden brush and seated on a pearl couch of sandalwood, he asked his teacher, saying, “There are sixty-four kinds of scripts (they are too numerous to record). Why do you teach only two kinds?” He then distinguished the root and branches of each for him; unable to comprehend, the teacher instead had his own understanding enlightened by him. As for all the arts, classical texts, archery and charioteering, astronomy and mathematics, he naturally understood them all. When he reached ten years of age, his cousin Devadatta and five hundred Śākya youths said to one another, “The Prince is clever and well-versed in books and treatises, but as for bodily strength, how could he surpass us? Let us test it together.” They beat drums and proclaimed the order, intending to practice the martial arts. There was an elephant blocking the gate; Devadatta struck its head and felled it to the ground, Nanda shoved it aside with his foot, and the Prince picked it up with his hand and cast it outside the city walls, catching it as it returned to the ground so that it did not suffer pain. Then they entered the park, where there were set out in ranks targets of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and so forth, seven drums of each kind. Devadatta shot first and pierced three; Nanda did the same. The Prince took up the bow of his ancestral Wheel-turning King and loosed an arrow that pierced through all the drums, entered the earth to bring forth a spring, and passed beyond the Great Iron Ring. When Devadatta and Nanda wrestled, their strength was equal; the Prince slowly took hold of his two younger cousins and brought them to the ground.
