The sūtra says: When the Prince was seventeen, the king sought a marriage for him. A brāhmaṇa of the Śākya clan had a daughter; the rites and ceremonies having been fully performed, she was welcomed into the palace. In walking and lying down, they were together, yet he had no worldly thoughts. In the quiet night, he practiced dhyāna-contemplation, and the singing girls doubted him. The Xiuxing ruiying [benqi] jing says: Everyone suspected that the Prince was not a man. He then pointed to his consort's belly and said, “After six years, you will give birth to a boy.” Consequently, she became pregnant. The Daquan [shenli] jing says: The Bodhisattva is free from desire; it was in order to cut off the suspicion that he was not a man that he took Gopā to wife. Rāhula descended from heaven and was born by transformation, not by sexual intercourse; this was also brought about by his original vow.
