The sūtra says: The Prince reached a quiet and secluded forest. Having given his jeweled crown, bright pearls, and necklace ornaments to Chandaka, he shaved his own beard and hair with a sword and made this vow: “May I, together with all beings, eradicate and sever the defilements.” At that time, the Heavenly Lord [Śakra] caught the hair and departed, praising him, saying, “Excellent!” The Daquan [shenli jing] says: No one can see the crown of the Bodhisattva's head, much less shave his hair; therefore he shaved his hair himself. It was also to remove the king's resentment. Furthermore, he recalled the Dharma of all past Buddhas, that their robes were not made of the seven precious things. The Śuddhāvāsa devas, knowing this, transformed into a hunter wearing a kāṣāya robe; the Bodhisattva then exchanged his jeweled garments for it. The Zhidu lun says: The robe obtained by exchange was a saṃghāṭī of coarse cloth. The sūtra says: When Chandaka saw this, he knew the Prince's resolution could not be turned back, and neighing, the horse returned with him.
