The sūtra says: At that time, seeing Chandaka return, the king's loving affection ran deep, and he wished to pursue the Prince himself. The royal preceptor and the great ministers admonished the king not to go, [saying,] “On the Prince's birthday, a hundred deities displayed auspicious signs, and all the devas honored him; how could he take pleasure in the worldly realm? The ṛṣi definitely proclaimed that he would not occupy the royal throne. We shall seek him ourselves.” They then went to the place of the ṛṣi, who all said he had already passed by. Halfway along the road, they saw him from afar reflecting beneath a tree. The minister then spoke to him fully. The Prince said, “How could I not know kindness? It is only on account of the suffering of the four afflictions. I will never take a step back.” He then arose to seek out the ṛṣis. The royal ministers then left five men behind to watch where he was. He then crossed the Gaṅgā River and traveled the road to Rājagṛha. The king and people of the entire country ordered carriages to pursue him, offering the throne to invite him back, but he in no way yielded his resolve, preaching the perils of the world to them. He then reached the place of the ṛṣi Kālāma, where they debated back and forth on doctrines, just as told above.
