After the Prince subdued the two ṛṣis, he proceeded to the forest of austerities on Mount Gayaśīrṣa, where Kauṇḍinya and the other five men were staying, beside the Nairañjanā River. For six years in quiet contemplation, he delivered practitioners of austerities. Devas offered hemp and rice; purifying his mind and upholding the precepts, he ate one grain of hemp or rice a day, or one grain of hemp or rice every seven days. Kauṇḍinya and the other five men also practiced austerities after his example. They sent a man to inform the king, conveying in full the signs of his suffering. Hearing this, the king was stricken with great sorrow; he immediately prepared five hundred wagons, and the Prince's maternal aunt and Yaśodharā each prepared five hundred wagons of living provisions, ordering Chandaka to escort and deliver them. Having arrived, [the Prince] would not accept them, and ordered them to return to the palace.
