經云。如來於七日中。觀樹思惟。我以盡漏本願成滿。得甚深法惟佛能知。然諸眾生處五濁世。三毒所覆薄福無智。不解深法。若轉法輪悉生誹謗。當墮惡道受無量苦。今者寧可入般涅槃。普曜云。正覺道成移坐石室。念九十六師各信所奉。我今如何將救拔之。

The sūtra says: The Tathāgata contemplated the tree for seven days, thinking, 'With the destruction of the outflows, my fundamental vow is fulfilled. I have attained a profound Dharma that only a buddha can know. Yet sentient beings dwell in the world of the five defilements, obscured by the three poisons, lacking merit and wisdom, and cannot understand this profound Dharma. If I turn the wheel of the Dharma, they will all slander it and fall into evil destinies to suffer immeasurable pain. It were better that I now enter parinirvāṇa.' The Puyao jing says: When he attained the path of correct enlightenment, he moved his seat to a stone chamber, reflecting, 'The ninety-six teachers each place faith in their own revered doctrines; how shall I now deliver them?'
