The sūtra says: The Buddha said to the bhikṣus, 'What you had to do is accomplished; you are fit to be fields of merit. You should each wander to different regions and convert beings with compassion. I alone shall go to Magadha to convert its people.' Thereupon they bowed their heads at his feet, took their robes and bowls, and departed in different directions. The sūtra says: When the Buddha went to the kingdom of Magadha, there were the three brothers Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa, who practiced the ancient rṣi teachings and were trusted and revered by the king and ministers; sharp of faculty and full of pride, they were difficult to subdue. He went to lodge with them, even staying in a dragon's cave; that night he subdued the dragon and displayed it clearly to him. Though subdued by his supernatural power, he still said, 'My way is true.' Later, the Four Heavenly Kings descended, Śakra descended, and Brahmā descended, each emitting radiance, so that he secretly admired him within. Later, when he tended the fire implements, the Buddha's power restrained them; though stubbornly resisting, he and his disciples went to the Buddha, and only after accepting surrender and receiving permission were his wishes fulfilled. He also invited him to live together and provided the four requisites, daily preparing fine food and personally going to invite the Buddha. The Buddha went north of this continent to fetch jambu fruit and the like. The Puyao jing says: He went to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven to fetch fruit from the Pārijāta tree, and fetched fruit from the other three continents, arriving early; they all marveled at this miracle. Śakra pointed at the earth to create a pond endowed with the eight virtues to supply the Buddha for rinsing and bathing. Kāśyapa inquired fully and was moved to joy by the heavenly omen, yet still did not submit. The Buddha saw rag cloth, picked it up, and washed it; thinking he needed a stone, Śakra transformed a square stone among the trees, and also went to Mount Gandhamādana to fetch a large stone basin filled with water for washing. Kāśyapa inquired fully and harboured private admiration. On another day the Buddha entered the pond to bathe; a tree spirit lowered a branch, and the Buddha sat by the tree. Kāśyapa held an assembly for seven days, where the king, ministers, and people gathered in great numbers; fearing that if the Buddha came, they would be moved by his marks, he wished he would not come to the gathering. The Buddha then went to the northern continent and did not return for seven nights. When leftover food remained, he thought the Buddha should come; responding to his thought, he immediately arrived, and when asked why he had not come, the Buddha answered him fully. His mind was astonished and his hair stood on end; though he thought it extraordinary, he still held himself to be true. On another day, knowing that their faculties were ripe, he went to the riverbank. Māra said to the Buddha, 'You ought to enter nirvāṇa.' The Buddha said, 'My fourfold assembly is not yet complete, and the outsiders are not yet subdued.' Māra then returned to his heavenly palace. At that time the Buddha entered the water, causing the water to part on both sides so that dust arose where he walked. Kāśyapa saw him from afar, thought he was drowning, and came with his disciples by boat to rescue him. Seeing him, he sighed in admiration and invited the Buddha onto the boat. The Tathāgata passed through the bottom of the boat and emerged to sit cross-legged within; master and disciples praised him, yet verbally he would not submit. The Benqi jing says: 'You are no arhat and do not know the realization of the Way; why do you stubbornly pretend without shame, claiming virtue for yourself?' Kāśyapa felt ashamed, bowed his head, and said, 'The Great Rṣi well knows my mind; may the Buddha accept me.' The Buddha said, 'You are one hundred and twenty years old, with many disciples, revered by the multitude; if you enter my Dharma, you must inform them.' He then consulted with them, and all followed the true conversion. First he converted Kāśyapa, who realized the fourth fruit, and also converted his five hundred followers. Downstream, his two younger brothers, each with two hundred and fifty disciples, saw the fire-worship implements floating downstream; they both came to their elder brother's place and likewise received the Buddha's conversion. He preached the Dharma to them all, and all attained the fourth fruit.
