In the country of Sthūla there was a brāhmaṇa named Kāśyapa. Endowed with the thirty-two bodily marks and thoroughly versed in the various treatises and scriptures, he possessed immense wealth and was fond of giving alms. His wife also possessed the auspicious marks. Neither of them had worldly desires, and both renounced home and entered the mountains. He reflected: 'The Buddhas leave the home life to cultivate the Way; I should do likewise.' He then donned a patch-robe of destroyed colour worth a thousand ounces of gold, shaved his own beard and hair, and quietly meditated in the mountains. A deity in the sky told him: 'A Buddha has now appeared.' Thereupon he proceeded to the Bamboo Grove. The Buddha went out to welcome him, received him, and preached the Dharma to him. He was awakened to the state of an arhat. He possessed great majesty and virtue, and was revered by gods and humans; hence he was called 'Mahā' ('the Great'). Down to the Buddha's passing into extinction, his maintaining the transformative teaching of the Dharma to extend into future generations for sixty thousand years was through this person's power.
