The Lalitavistara states: When the king heard that [the Buddha] had attained the Way, six years had already passed. Feeling grief and joy, he wished to see him. There was a brāhmaṇa named Udāyin, who had been the Bodhisattva's attendant. The king ordered him to go and invite him, saying: 'Since we parted, twelve years have passed, and I long to see him once.' Receiving the command, he went to invite him. The Buddha said to him, 'Welcome!' and he attained awakening to the fourth fruit. [The Buddha] then sent him back to report and manifest spiritual penetrations in his native country, [announcing that] after seven days the Buddha would descend and arrive. The king went out forty li to welcome the Buddha, extensively arraying attendants and guards, shaking the great chiliocosm. Seeing him, the king was greatly delighted and selected five hundred men from noble clans to become śramaṇas and attend upon him. At that time, Nanda also became a śramaṇa. Stepping forward to pay homage, he caused heaven and earth to shake greatly. The Buddha entered the palace, and Rāhula came forward. The Buddha manifested many bodies, one yet not different. Rāhula went straight forward to the place of the true Buddha, thereby demonstrating that he was blameless. The whole country celebrated together in peace, happiness, and tranquillity. For three months in the year and six days [in the month], they observed the precepts without interruption.
