The Dīrgha Āgama states: The Buddha dwelt alone with Ānanda in Vaiśālī. After the summer retreat, his whole body ached. He told Ānanda: 'Anyone who has cultivated the four bases of spiritual power (ṛddhipāda) can, according to his wish, remain without dying for a kalpa or more than a kalpa. The Buddha possesses far more than this, so that gods and humans may attain peace.' He said this two or three times, but Ānanda was clouded by Māra and did not grasp the Buddha's intention. Māra requested the Buddha, saying: 'I pray that you enter nirvāṇa,' entreating up to three times. [The Buddha] informed him: 'After three months from now, in my native land, in Kuśinagara between the twin trees in the Śāla Grove, I shall attain extinction.' Immediately heaven and earth shook violently, and all people and beings were startled and frightened. The Buddha said there are eight earthquakes and eight signs. He then gathered the great assembly and universally proclaimed it so they would know of his nirvāṇa, saying: 'On the morning of the fifteenth day of the second month, light will radiate and illuminate the great chiliocosm, extending to the beings of the six destinies across the ten directions. Meeting the light, their sins will be eliminated, and with one voice they will mourn and yearn.' The fifty-four assemblies gathered all at once like clouds, each arranging offerings; even [beings from] immeasurable Buddha lands of the ten directions all came together. Only the two assemblies of Kāśyapa and Ānanda were absent. When what was to be manifested was completed, the light entered back through his mouth. In the assembly, there was the upāsaka Cunda and ten others who jointly prepared an offering to cross [beings] over, cooking eight hu of non-glutinous rice. By the Buddha's spiritual power, it amply satisfied the great assembly.
