The Dīrgha Āgama states: The Buddha entered the city and headed toward the twin trees. He ordered Ānanda to arrange the seat, making the feet face south, the head north, and the face westward, because the Dharma would long circulate in the north. The Buddha himself folded his saṅghāṭī fourfold and lay on his right side, crossing his feet and resting like a lion king. Spirits and gods scattered flowers on the ground. The Buddha extensively explained: 'In the past, I was a wheel-turning king six times and laid my bones in this land. Now, having attained correct awakening, I once again cast off my life and body in this place to enter nirvāṇa.' There was a bodhisattva named Kāśyapa who questioned extensively about the cause of the illness and resolved all doubts. The Buddha arose from reclining and emitted a great light that illuminated immeasurable lands; the sufferings of the various eight hot and eight cold hells were completely extinguished. Amid the light he proclaimed: 'All sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature,' and extensively expounded the essentials of the Dharma, crossing over countless people. Hence, he manifested leaning and reclining to provide the cause of attaining the Way for those who had not yet attained it. Furthermore, the eight classes of beings broadly arranged offerings. They wrapped his body in a thousand pieces of fine cotton cloth (karpāsa), placed it in a coffin of the seven jewels, poured fragrant oil, and heaped fragrant wood. When burned, two cloths did not burn: one on the outside and one on the inside, for the sake of dispersing relics to all sentient beings. The Dīrgha Āgama states: The Buddha prophesied the fruits of the Way attained by one thousand two hundred disciples, parted his uttarāsaṅga, revealed his golden arm, and said that the appearance of a Buddha in the world is like the udumbara flower.
