The Two-Fascicle Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: [The Buddha] addressed the monks: 'You must carefully heed the Buddha's bequeathed instructions together. Only after more than one hundred and forty million years will there be a Buddha again. I have been a holy teacher up to seventy-nine [years of age]; all that was to be done has been thoroughly fulfilled. Strive diligently! The night is already half gone; you should not be negligent, for wholesome dharmas arise from diligence. All compounded things are impermanent: this is my final teaching.' Thereupon the World-Honoured One entered the first dhyāna, the second, the third, and the fourth dhyāna, the sphere of boundless space, boundless consciousness, nothingness, up to the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and entered the cessation of perception and feeling. Emerging from this meditative absorption, he entered the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, down to the fourth, third, second, and first dhyāna. Again from the first dhyāna he entered the second, third, and fourth dhyāna. Emerging from this meditative absorption, he entered parinirvāṇa. At that time, the great earth shook and trembled, and the dark realms became brightly illuminated. The heavens rained fragrant flowers, scattering them over the great assembly. Brahmā, Śakra, and the divine spirits each composed verses of praise. The monks wept bitterly and fainted away. Aniruddha admonished and stopped them: 'The gods fill the sky; if the monks cry out in grief and create a commotion, I fear they will incur blame.' Having heard this admonition, they restrained one another.
