The sūtra states: The monks expounded the Dharma throughout the night until dawn. Aniruddha told Ānanda to enter the city and inform them that the Tathāgata had already passed into extinction, so they should know what to do. Hearing this, they wept bitterly in grief. Each brought fragrant flowers and musical instruments and went to the trees to make offerings. After one day had passed, they placed the relics upon a couch. Deities raised its corners and entered the eastern gate of the city, traversing all the streets and alleys. The people of the state all went out to the western gate of the city. At a high and conspicuous place, by the will of the gods, it was kept until the seventh day so that they could make offerings. Then it was carried out through the northern gate, crossing the Hiraṇyavatī River. In the Makuṭabandhana Caitya, all made ready various implements, preparing the funeral equipment according to the rites for a wheel-turning king. After bathing with scented water, it was wrapped all around with cotton cloth (karpāsa), placed inside a golden coffin, and enclosed in an outer iron sarcophagus. Sandalwood and precious incenses were piled above; as they were about to apply fire, the gods extinguished it, in order to wait for Kāśyapa.
