The Māyā Sūtra states: When the Buddha entered nirvāṇa, the five signs of decay and five great nightmares appeared to Lady [Māyā] in the heavens. At that time, Aniruddha, having encoffined the Tathāgata, ascended to the heavens to inform her. Hearing this, she fainted with grief. Having revived, she descended with her retinue, and seeing the Buddha's coffin from afar, she could not contain herself. Stepping forward, she bowed with her head to the ground, and heavenly flowers were scattered. Looking upon the great robe, bowl, and staff, she held them in grief and sorrow, her tears falling like a river. By the Buddha's spiritual power, the coffin lid suddenly opened. Joining his palms to comfort her, he sat up from within and emitted a thousand rays of light. A thousand Buddhas joined their palms to inquire after Māyā: 'You have condescended to come down from afar. All conditioned phenomena are naturally thus; please do not weep.' He expounded various verses at length. The Buddha said: 'The Tathāgata performed the above act for the sake of unfilial people of future times.' This is called the Sūtra of the Meeting of Mother and Son. Thereupon he bade farewell, and the coffin suddenly closed. The three-thousandfold world shook, and the eight classes of beings were sorrowful and moved.
