The sūtra states: Mahākāśyapa was in the country of Pāvā when he saw a Nirgrantha holding a heavenly flower. Knowing that the Buddha had passed into extinction, he went to the Makuṭabandhana Caitya. Wishing to see the Buddha's body, he entreated three times but was not permitted. He circumambulated the coffin with joined palms. The Buddha thrust out his two feet from the layered coffin; they were discoloured. Inquiring thoroughly, [Kāśyapa] learned that they were soiled by women's tears. The fourfold assembly and all the devas together paid homage to the Buddha's feet, which after a moment concealed themselves. Kāśyapa circumambulated the coffin three times and chanted verses. Spontaneously it caught fire without being lit. Tree deities extinguished the fire, and fragrant flowers were offered. The Dīrgha Āgama states: Having burned completely through the night, four trees suddenly grew.
