Now, when the Dharma King appears in the world, opening up the secular comes first. In the secular realm, ancestral traditions trace back to great-grandfathers, and clan affiliations maintain succession; hence clans are designated according to convention, as listed before. In the institutions of the Dharma Gate, unobstructed equality is foremost. Those entering from the four castes are all alike extinguished [in caste distinction]; wearing only the seed of the Dharma, they become its heirs. Therefore the Ekottarika Āgama says: 'When the four rivers enter the ocean, they no longer have their original names and are all named the Great Ocean; when the four castes go forth from the household life, they no longer have their original surnames, but are simply called śramaṇas, sons of Śākya.' Why is this? Birth is born from me; completion is completed from the Dharma. One should seek skillful means to become a son of Śākya and should learn in this manner. The Mahīśāsaka and Dīrgha Āgama say: 'Down to the time of Maitreya Buddha, the bhikṣus will have the surname Maitrī, and all will be called sons of Maitrī.'
