The Zhong benqi jing states: Seeing that the thousand men under Kāśyapa had refined minds but crude appearances and lacked handsome features, the father-king selected clan members of dignified deportment to fill the monastic order. Their bright forms reflected the Buddha's marks, and each was adorned with supreme splendour. Onlookers filled the roads as they set out to the Buddha's place. Devadatta's crown fell off, and Upāli's elephant prostrated itself. The diviners considered these inauspicious. Both requested to leave the household life. The Buddha said: 'Being a śramaṇa is truly not easy. You should remain at home, sharing your charity and bestowing alms.' He repeated this three times. Devadatta harboured evil thoughts: 'Does the Buddha envy me?' He then shaved his own hair and cultivated pure conduct. Later, he committed the five heinous transgressions and entered hell alive, chanting 'Namo' with his mouth until the Buddha prophesied: 'In the future he will emerge to become a pratyekabuddha named Namo.' Maudgalyāyana, who understood sixty-four sounds, went to the hell to comfort him. [Devadatta] replied: 'I lie in Avīci, suffering yet untired.' The Da zhidu lun states: 'Kokālika slandered Śāriputra, so in the end he entered the Lotus Hell.'
