四分。阿那律母為作三時殿婇女娛樂。兄摩訶男以家事累欲自出家。釋種八人同時出家。先度優波離心除慢故。時跋提獨坐樹間。夜中高聲言甚樂。以事白佛。我念在家內外自衛猶有恐怖。今獨在塚間無懼患。我念出離之樂。佛言。善哉釋子。斯道甚快。

The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: Aniruddha's mother made palaces for the three seasons for him, with court ladies to entertain him. His elder brother Mahānāman, burdened by household affairs, wished to go forth himself. Eight men of the Śākya clan renounced home at the same time. [The Buddha] first ordained Upāli in order to eradicate arrogance from their minds. At that time, Bhaddiya sat alone among the trees. In the middle of the night, he called out loudly: 'How blissful!' He explained the matter to the Buddha: 'I recall that when I was at home, guarded within and without, I still felt fear. Now, alone among the graves, I have no dread or worry. I reflect upon the bliss of renunciation.' The Buddha said: 'Excellent, Śākya son! This path is exceedingly delightful.'
