Mahāprajāpatī is translated into Chinese as Da'aidao (Great Love for the Path); she is also called Gautamī. The maternal aunt Da'aidao addressed the assembly, saying, "I cannot bear to see the Buddha enter extinction." Together with five hundred bhikṣuṇīs (that is, nun; Kang Senghui's commentary on the Fajing says that because the noble ones sever the famine of the six passions, they obtain this name), she came to the Buddha's place. Having paid homage, she stated that she wished to enter extinction first. The Buddha remained silent. She caressed the Buddha's feet with her hands and said, "This is the last time I will see the Tathāgata." The Buddha expounded for her that the body is an affliction and extinction is peace. The nuns paid homage and returned to the monastery; setting out five hundred seats, they each manifested supernatural powers, shaking the heavens above, and entered parinirvāṇa simultaneously. The Buddha told Ānanda to enter the city and announce it everywhere so that offerings would be made. They then cremated them and brought the relics to the Buddha's place. A thousand monks from the four quarters flew in and took their seats. The Buddha ordered Ānanda to take a bowl and fill it with the relics. The Buddha received it with both hands and told the monks, "This heap of relics was originally an impure body, ruining the path and destroying virtue, plotting and envious; now my mother has been able to pluck out ignorance and impurity, arouse the conduct of a great man, and transfer her spirit to original nonbeing. Let the four assemblies and the eight classes erect a stūpa and make offerings." All said, "So be it." The Saṃyuktāgama states that she was Nanda's biological mother. The Ekottarāgama states: The Buddha ordered Ānanda, Nanda, and Rāhula to carry Da'aidao's bier, and the Buddha personally made offerings. Śakra and the Four Heavenly Kings wished to make offerings to her, but the Buddha said, "Stop, stop! When parents bear a child, their kindness is great; one must repay their kindness, it cannot be left unrepaid. When the mothers of the buddhas of the three times enter extinction first, they all personally make offerings and cremate the relics." The Buddha personally lifted one leg of the bier, and Ānanda also lifted it, flying to the cemetery. The Buddha took sandalwood and placed it on her body, and then expounded that four kinds of people should have stūpas erected to make offerings to them, because they transform beings through the ten virtues.
